Steam Cleaning in Weed Control and Management

In horticulture, good yield crop is dependent on many factors and one of which
is an effective weed control strategy. As consumers become more health- and
environmental-conscious, the use of pesticides for weed management is increasingly
frowned upon due to the potential harmful residues in produce as well as the harm
they pose to the land, water and air.

The lookout for more sustainable methods of growing produce and plants has given
way to trends like organic farming focusing on crop rotation, chemicals-free
fertilisers among others. This is where steam management comes in. The utilisation
of steam in weed management has, in fact, been practised for decades. How is
it effective?

Steam, when applied in consistent temperature of 100OC, is able to penetrate the
crown of the plant (weed) as well as its root and cell structure; thereby,
effectively dehydrating and
destroying it.

This method is also safer for both the crops and environment because no other
chemicals, e.g. pesticides, are used. The yielded produce is also free of any
pesticide residues that may pose harm to consumers. Another benefit of steam
management is the convenience and flexibility. Steam management can be applied
irrespective of the weather conditions.
